Now we connect the cable from the ISP to one of the two WAN ports on the router I use. It’s quite an old router but as saolid as any router they make today. And it does everything I have asked it to do. It is a 2014 vintage routerm, the Cisco RV-325 Small Business Router. It has been discontinued so it can be had for about $100.00 and up.
This device has 14 1G LAN (Local Area Network) ports. It has 2 1G WAN (Wide Area Network) ports taht can be agragated to be 1 2G port.
Gateway
The Internet Gateway for Perkinsville is being provided for by this Cisco router. It is only being used for gateway and routing services. This is where the Firewall is implemented. There is port forwarding and port address translation going on in this device.
WIFI and DHCP/DNS services are provided for by other hardware.
DHCP/DNS Services
I am currently using Spectrum for my ISP. It’s not the best but it is adequate for me as I am now retired.
I had 1GB Fiber for several years. Initially it was very fast. I used it for VOIP calling. Voice Over IP is the fastest way to check out the latency of your network. You can easily hear the latency in the call. But that provider raised the cost of my connection while reducing the cost to a new customer for the exact same connection. Loyalty doesn’t mean SHIT to a company now days. All they care about is how many they sign up.
Anyway, as I said – Spectrum is adequate for my needs so i’ll say no more.
The signal comes in from the alley over coaxial cable to a Spectrum Provided Modem. There is no additional cost for the modem. I am currently paying 50.00 for a 500 MB connection. nothing to shout aboutm just adequate.
I did not order a router or wifi from Spectrum. It is simply just an extra cost for hardware that I already have. I’ll describe that equipment in a later post.
All I need is a single RJ-45 from the cable modem to plug into my router. There is only one RJ-45 port on the cable modem so this works perfectly .
perkinsville.net: This name was created by me and has been registered to me in my name since the inception of this domain on October8, 2005. This domain requires a fee to be paid yearly to maintain my ownership of this domain name. The fee is about $20.00 U.S. dollars and is due on the anniversary date, October 8.
The decision to choose an Internet Service Provider (ISP) is not relevant to the operation of the domain. I use a domain name service provider to manage the domain location (the public IP address), the DNS servers, the mx servers (currently zoho.com)for the email *@perkinsville.net. Choose the ISP for price or speed or reliability but not for the domain name.
